چکیده
Nuclear binding energies and two-neutron separation energies are analyzed starting from the liquid-drop model and the nuclear shell model in order to describe the global trends of the above observables. We subsequently concentrate on the Interacting Boson Model (IBM) and discuss a new method in order to provide a consistent description of both, ground-state and excited-state properties. We address the artefacts that appear when crossing mid-shell using the IBM formulation and perform detailed numerical calculations for nuclei situated in the 50−82 shell. We also concentrate on local deviations from the above global trends in binding energy and two-neutron separation energies that appear in the neutron-deficient Pb region. We address possible effects on the binding energy, caused by mixing of low-lying 0 + intruder states into the ground state, using configuration mixing in the IBM framework. We 1 also study ground-state properties using a deformed mean-field approach. Detailed comparisons with recent experimental data in the Pb region are amply discussed.

An algebraic sp(4) shell model is introduced to achieve a deeper understanding and interpretation of the properties of pairing-governed 0 states in medium mass atomic nuclei. The theory, which embodies the simplicity of a dynamical symmetry approach to nuclear structure, is shown to reproduce the excitation spectra and fine structure effects driven by proton-neutron interactions and isovector p...

The Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM) provides a means for nuclear structure calculations starting from realistic NN potentials. The dominant short-range central and tensor correlations are described explicitly by a unitary transformation. The application of UCOM in the context of the no-core shell model provides insight into the interplay between dominant short-range and residual long...

The structure of nuclei far off β-stability is investigated by nuclear many-body theory. In-medium interactions for asymmetric nuclear matter are obtained by (Dirac-) Brueckner theory thus establishing the link of nuclear forces to free space interactions. HFB and RPA theory is used to describe ground and excited states of nuclei from light to heavy masses. In extreme dripline systems pairing a...

We introduce spin projection methods in the shell model Monte Carlo approach and apply them to calculate the spin distribution of level densities for iron-region nuclei using the complete (pf+g9/2)shell. We compare the calculated distributions with the spin-cutoff model and extract an energydependent moment of inertia. For even-even nuclei and at low excitation energies, we observe a significan...
